94/100 — Campbell Mattinson · 2024 Vintage · 2 Dec
“I sat with this wine over the course of a few hours and it just got better and better. It’s a meaty pinot noir with spice and undergrowth characters laid on, and at least initially there’s a clear application of cedarwood oak too, which adds a bit of spunk but also obfuscates slightly, or at least at first. But by the end of my experience with this wine those oak notes had nestled in beautifully, which then seemed to help the finish to spread out and seek new territory, which then elevated the wine significantly. The end result is a structured, powerful pinot noir of both personality and length – which will, over the medium term, age beautifully.”
About This Wine
The Georgica Vineyard is a 30-year-old vineyard located in Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. It is described as a classic warm site within a cool region, positioned at elevation and receiving generous sunshine hours.
This Georgica Pinot Noir shows a signature Mornington savoury tannin profile, with potpourri and cherry characters and aromatic lift. Some whole-bunch is used depending on the vintage, and the wine sees under 20% new French oak.
About the Producer
Mike Symons has over 35 years of viticultural and winemaking experience. He began under Brian Croser at Petaluma in 1989 before moving to the Mornington Peninsula, where he worked for 18 years at Stonier managing vineyards across multiple sites.
In 2022, he established his own label, Symons, focusing on vineyard-driven wines with restrained oak and a minimal-intervention approach in the winery.
