The 2024 Polperro Coverdale Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir from the Coverdale family vineyard, owned by winemaker Sam Coverdale. Situated on a sheltered northerly slope looking toward the Dandenong Ranges, the site delivers even ripening, mid-palate fruit weight and structured tannins.
This single-vineyard release is produced exclusively from one acre of MV6 clone Pinot Noir. The vineyard is farmed with a sustainability-focused and regenerative approach, incorporating biological, biodynamic and organic practices.
The fruit was hand-harvested and destemmed as whole berries into two-tonne open fermenters, then left to begin fermentation naturally. The ferment was not worked until a two to three degree drop in baumé, encouraging fermentation inside the berries and increasing aromatic lift.
Once fermentation was active, the wine was hand-plunged two to three times per day for 15 days, then left on skins for a further 15 days post-ferment. It was pressed and matured for 16 months in oak, with 30% new oak, predominantly Sirugue extra-tight-grain, light-toast barrels. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
92 points - Huon Hooke, The Real Review
Tasted 28 May 2026. Deep, dark and brooding, with chocolate, cocoa powder and vanilla notes, supple mouthfeel, firm tannins and a finish that may reveal more with time.
Nose: Dark fruits, cherry, plum and quince jam, layered with freshly turned soil.
Palate: Brambly and savoury, with forest floor, spiced quince, blue and black fruits, plum berry compote and puckery tannins. A fine acid line carries elegant length.
Pair with roast duck, mushroom dishes, lamb cutlets, charcuterie, game birds or earthy vegetable dishes.
Drinking window: 2027-2033.
