Overview

Alberelli di Giodo Carricante is Carlo and Bianca Ferrini’s white expression of Mount Etna. First produced from the 2020 vintage, this pure Carricante combines high-altitude freshness with the mineral character of Etna’s volcanic soils. The 2023 is precise and energetic, showing citrus and orchard fruit, saline detail and a long, mineral-driven finish.

Vineyard

The Alberelli di Giodo project comprises small high-altitude parcels on Mount Etna, where Carricante and Nerello Mascalese grow predominantly as traditional alberello bush vines. The vineyards lie between approximately 560 and 850 metres above sea level, with favourable northern exposures and black pumice-rich volcanic soils contributing freshness, structure and pronounced minerality.

The 2023 Carricante is sourced from Contrada Volpare on the slopes of Etna, where the combination of altitude and volcanic terrain gives the variety its distinctive tension and mineral expression.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Fermentation and maturation take place entirely in stainless steel at controlled temperature. The wine remains for approximately nine months on its fine lees with regular stirring before further bottle ageing, preserving Carricante’s freshness and purity without the influence of oak.

Producer

Giodo was founded by Carlo Ferrini in Montalcino in 2002, with his daughter Bianca now closely involved in the project. The name Giodo pays tribute to Carlo’s parents, Giovanna and Donatello, while the estate’s philosophy centres on meticulous vineyard work, purity of fruit and precise expression of terroir.

Drawn to Mount Etna’s volcanic landscape, Ferrini later established the Alberelli di Giodo project in Sicily. Nerello Mascalese was first produced from the 2016 vintage, followed by Carricante from 2020. The Etna wines focus on high-altitude vineyards, traditional alberello vines and the freshness and minerality imparted by volcanic soils.
