Overview

Alberelli di Giodo is Carlo and Bianca Ferrini’s expression of Nerello Mascalese from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. The 2022 combines bright red fruit, mineral intensity and savoury spice with finely structured tannins and vibrant acidity, capturing both the delicacy and power possible from old, high-altitude Nerello Mascalese.

Vineyard

The fruit comes from Contrada Rampante on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The vines are predominantly trained in the traditional alberello bush-vine system and grow in volcanic soils rich in lava, pumice and mineral material.

The Alberelli di Giodo project is based on small, high-altitude parcels where old Nerello Mascalese vines benefit from cool conditions, northern exposure and significant day-to-night temperature variation. These conditions help preserve freshness while the volcanic soils contribute the distinctive saline and mineral character of the wine.

Winemaking

The 2022 is matured for approximately 18 months in 500- and 700-litre wooden barrels. The wine is bottled without filtration, preserving texture, aromatic detail and the character of the old-vine fruit.

Producer

Giodo was founded by Carlo Ferrini in Montalcino in 2002, with his daughter Bianca now closely involved in the project. The name Giodo pays tribute to Carlo’s parents, Giovanna and Donatello, while the estate’s philosophy centres on meticulous vineyard work, purity of fruit and precise expression of terroir.

Drawn to Mount Etna’s volcanic landscape, Ferrini established the Alberelli di Giodo project in Sicily, releasing the first pure Nerello Mascalese from the 2016 vintage. The project focuses on small, high-altitude parcels, traditional alberello vines and the freshness, structure and mineral character of Etna’s volcanic soils.
