STORY BEHIND THE WINE

Langmeil is home to The Freedom Shiraz vineyard, which we believe was planted in 1843 by vigneron Christian Auricht. Escaping war and persecution in Prussia, Auricht travelled to his new homeland, finding Freedom in the Barossa Valley. His original plantings survive to this day and at 172 years old are some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world.

THE WINERY

The Lindner family of Langmeil Winery has been immersed in the Barossa’s culture of farming, food and community for six generations. Their commitment to quality in all aspects is unwavering and any wine that bears the Langmeil name represents the family’s pursuit of excellence in wine and community. The family’s vision is to highlight the rare qualities of old vine Shiraz using hands-on winemaking techniques. Gentle destemming, open fermentation, basket pressing and two years in French oak accentuate the natural fruit intensity and structure.

Critic tasting note: (2022 vintage) "This wine shows great old-vine character coming from vines planted in 1843. Aromas of blackberries, blood plums, mocha, tobacco leaves and ferric earth. The palate is densely packed, with ultra-fine tannins and bright acidity that give layers of complexity. So textural and refined, with a long life ahead. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - James Suckling

Tasting notes:

Deep crimson with purple hues. An intense aroma of ripe Satsuma plum, herbal and savoury notes combine with hints of cedar and sweet spices. Rich, sweet fruit is balanced wonderfully with briary and sweet spices and lovely, silky tannins. A full-bodied, textural wine, showing great complexity with hints of cedar and allspice flowing through to the lengthy, peppery, fruity finish.bly fruit finish.
