Cyril Henschke is Henschke's single-vineyard Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, named in tribute to fourth-generation winemaker Cyril Henschke, one of Australia's pioneering advocates of old-vine, single-vineyard and quality varietal wines. First produced as a single-vineyard wine in 1978, it is renowned for its texture, depth, complexity and fine-grained tannins.
The 2022 season began with good winter rainfall and a cool, slow start, with budburst around two weeks later than average. A severe hail event in October significantly reduced crop potential, while later flowering delivered good fruit set at smaller yields. A mild, dry finish to summer followed welcome January rainfall, resulting in a late harvest. Henschke describes the resulting single-vineyard wines as showing elegance, distinction and strong potential for long-term cellaring.
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the Cyril Henschke Vineyard on the Henschke Eden Valley property. The vineyard is situated on a north-facing slope and is managed using organic and biodynamic practices. Cyril Henschke planted Cabernet Sauvignon on the property in the late 1960s.
Matured for 20 months in French oak hogsheads, comprising 5% new and 95% seasoned oak, prior to blending and bottling.
Henschke: “Deep crimson with ruby hues. Spicy, fragrant aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, tamarillo and violets are lifted by nuances of cassis, cocoa, black liquorice and crushed flowering herbs. An alluring core of concentrated black fruits is framed by cedar, clove, star anise and black olive, with focused acidity and fine-grained tannins driving a long, powerful finish.”

Winepilot – 97/100: “There is a very strong case that this might be the best Cyril yet released. It was first produced as a single vineyard wine back in 1978 from vines planted in 1969. From the 1990s it's been coming from Stephen and Prue's vineyard planted in 1988. In many ways, this marks a slightly different direction for the Cyril, although the essential stylistic varietal expression remains strong. It's a firm and slightly tighter wine of terrific linear structure with a bright, lively acidity, which in this vintage is particularly evident. The thread of blackcurrant fruit merges with a slightly dried herb and sage-like character. It is probably the most precisely focused of any Cyril to date, leading to its poise and defined, detailed finish. Surprisingly, in some ways, it gets just a 5% smidgeon of new oak with the remainder seasoned. So you are getting a clear window into the vineyard and the vintage influence.”
