2021 Pizzini Coronamento Nebbiolo 750ml

About This Wine

Coronamento is an Italian word that translates to “Crowning of one’s achievements”.

The label art is by Roberto Pizzini, circa 1950, playing songs from the mountains of Trentino while reminiscing with friends on hot summer nights in the King Valley.

The fruit selected for Coronamento is grown on the highest vineyard site on Pizzini's King Valley property, at 350 metres above sea level.

The vineyard was planted using a new clone of Nebbiolo named Nebbiolo 230. Only the best grape bunches are selected, based on vine health, cane maturity, bunch maturity, fruit flavour, tannin ripeness and seed maturity.

Winter 2021 was the wettest winter Pizzini had seen in 10 years, with slow steady rains helping to penetrate the soil and provide good moisture to the vine roots.

A cooler than usual summer allowed vines to spend more time in the optimal temperature range for flavour and phenolic development. Pizzini describes 2021 as a “vintage year”, where optimal conditions resulted in high quality and reasonably high yield.

After harvesting, the whole bunches were crushed and de-stemmed into small fermentation vats and inoculated with Barolo yeast, allowing maximum varietal characters to come through.

Fermentation was allowed to reach and maintain 30°C, lasting seven to ten days. The wine was then lightly pressed and transferred to French oak barrels for 12 months, before being transferred to aged 1000-1200 litre casks for a further six months prior to bottling.

Producer Notes

Deep garnet red in colour with a classic orange hue typical of this variety. Complex aromas of dried roses, violets, spice, dark fruits, earth and an underlying tarriness.

The palate is rich and powerful with flavours of star anise, dark berries, chocolate, tar, black tea and mandarin rind. The textured tannins and full flavour make for a wine of great poise and structure.

Enjoy with spiced pork ribs, game meats or aged cheese.
