The 2019 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro is a benchmark Clare Valley blend from one of Australia's most revered cult wineries. Combining old-vine Shiraz and Mataro from historic dry-grown vineyards, this wine delivers remarkable intensity, structure, and longevity while remaining unmistakably Wendouree in character.
Founded in 1893, Wendouree has built a legendary reputation among collectors for producing some of Australia's most age-worthy wines. The estate's old vineyards, many planted on their own roots, consistently produce fruit of extraordinary concentration and complexity.
The exceptional 2019 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest recent releases from Wendouree. Low yields and ideal ripening conditions produced fruit with outstanding intensity, purity, and tannin quality. The result is a wine of tremendous power and precision that perfectly balances richness with freshness.
Shiraz provides layers of blackberry, plum, black cherry, and liquorice, while Mataro contributes savoury spice, earthy depth, floral perfume, and structural tension. Traditional winemaking techniques and careful maturation in French oak preserve the authenticity of the vineyard expression. Bottled under screwcap, the wine is destined for long-term cellaring.
The bouquet reveals intense aromas of blackberry, satsuma plum, dark chocolate, black pepper, dried herbs, ironstone, and exotic spice.
