Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz is produced entirely from the remaining five hectares of the original Penfolds property in Adelaide's eastern suburbs. The 2000 vintage combines exceptional historical significance with a remarkably low-yielding season—the smallest crop recorded since the wine's inaugural 1983 vintage.
Magill Estate is Penfolds' only single-vineyard wine and is both grown and made at the original estate established in 1844. The wine is crafted in the historic winery using traditional methods: the grapes are picked by hand, vinified in open fermenters and basket pressed.
First produced in 1983, Magill Estate Shiraz is recognised for its elegant structure, velvety texture and fine tannins. Since the 1997 vintage, the wine has also been presented in a distinctive laser-etched bottle.
The 2000 season produced a high-quality but exceptionally small crop, with harvest completed during the third week of February. The Shiraz reached optimal ripeness with excellent varietal character, despite yields being the lowest since the inaugural vintage.
Following traditional open fermentation and basket pressing, the wine was matured for 14 months in new oak comprising 80% French and 20% American barrels.
Producer Tasting Note: Bright, brick red. Youthful with liqueured cumquat fruits meshed with scents of spice, pepper and dried tea-leaf. The fruit aromas are supported by notes of cured meats and berry, and bordered by smokey, cedary French oak - all classic Magill hallmarks. An explosion of fruit upon contact - the sweetness of which conveys a nectar-like, citrussy richness. A suggestion of sage/thyme gives way to a chocolately/cherry flavour on the finish.

Tasted June 2003
The 2000 is a super plush wine with fabulous savoury, chocolate cherry flavours, mid-palate elegance and spice that simply jumps from the glass. The best Magill we've tasted since the early 1990s.

Tasted January 2003
This vintage, typical of this wine, is a black beauty—there's vibrant black fruit here, but also black pepper, char and earth. Chewy tannins and chocolate and earth on the finish.
