“Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet leads with blackberry and cassis, with lesser notes of spice and cedar. The wine then shifts more into the blackberry and bitter chocolate flavours on the long palate, sustained by lingering tannins. More elegant than the Bin 389, but will also be very long lived.”

About This Wine

Launched with the 1990 vintage in 1993, Bin 407 was developed in response to the increasing availability of high quality cabernet sauvignon fruit.

Inspired by Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and approachability, while retaining structure and depth of flavour.

Textbook cabernet sauvignon, Bin 407 highlights the rewards of Penfolds multi-region, multi-vineyard blending, with a core of ripe fruit supported by sensitive use of French and American oak.

1998 was an outstanding vintage and many Penfolds wines would vie for the top honours of the decade alongside the 1990 and 1996 vintages.

The Coonawarra delivered large volumes of remarkably consistent grapes and it was immediately clear that Cabernet was of wonderful, generous quality.

Producer Notes

COLOUR Deep red with purple hued rim.

NOSE Classic, varietally defined Cabernet Sauvignon aromas with a hint of eucalyptus. Exuberant plum and mocha notes are combined with nuances of dried leaf, soy and black olive aromas rising above the subtle background of lightly spiced cedary oak.

PALATE Full-bodied, generous flavors of red currant and black currant conserve with a suggestion of praline and anise. Pronounced, but not aggressive oak tannins are all but soaked up by the fruit resulting in a silky finish.
