90/100 — Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com #E2002 · Feb 2002
“Notes of asphalt, blackberry, plum, and also a touch of prune are present in this ruggedly constructed Rockford Basket Press Shiraz. The wine shows density, exceptional quality, and still some rough tannins in the finish. This might be the one vintage of the 90s that ages less gracefully, given the somewhat angular, aggressive tannins it possesses. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015.”
Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is produced in the Barossa Valley.
The Shiraz fruit is sourced from local growers, including dry-grown old vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa, including around Kalimna, Ebenezer, the Eden Valley and Central Barossa.
The vines are between 60 and 136 years old.
Rockford Wines — 5 Star Winery - Halliday Wine Companion
“Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be. It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door or mail order (Rocky O'Callaghan's entrancing annual newsletter is like no other). Some wine is sold through restaurants, and there are two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whether they will have the Basket Press Shiraz available is another matter; it is as scarce as Henschke Hill of Grace (but less expensive).” - James Halliday
“Robert O’Callaghan is the very modest owner and winemaker of Rockford Wines in the Barossa Valley. One of the most respected boutique wineries in Australia, Rockford produces the Basket Press Shiraz (first vintage 1984) and the Black Shiraz, a sparkling red that is almost black in colour. In the 1970s when wineries were updating their equipment, Robert bought and restored buildings from the 1850's and old winemaking machinery so that he could make his wines using both traditional winemaking techniques and equipment - his only concession to the latter half of the twentieth century is refrigeration and some new forms of yeast. The Shiraz fruit is sourced from local growers - many of the best dry-grown old vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa - including around Kalimna, Ebenezer, the Eden Valley and Central Barossa. The vines are between 60 and 136 years old giving fruit of tremendous colour, power and richness.”
