The 2024 Te Mata Estate Coleraine is the flagship red wine of Te Mata Estate and one of New Zealand’s most celebrated Cabernet-based blends. Widely regarded as a benchmark of Hawke’s Bay fine wine, Coleraine combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in a style that balances power, elegance, and exceptional ageing potential.
Fruit for the 2024 release was sourced from Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyard sites in Hawke’s Bay, where free-draining gravel soils and a warm maritime climate provide ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. The vintage delivered fruit of outstanding concentration and purity, while retaining freshness and structural precision.
In the winery, parcels were fermented separately with careful extraction to preserve varietal character and tannin finesse. Maturation took place in French oak barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak, allowing the wine to gain complexity, depth, and seamless integration before final blending.
The wine reveals a deeply layered bouquet of blackcurrant, cassis, dark plum, and blackberry, intertwined with notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and subtle spice. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and impeccably structured, showing concentrated dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and finely grained tannins that carry through a long, savoury finish.
Still youthful and tightly framed, the 2024 Coleraine will reward extended cellaring over 20–35+ years, developing further complexity and tertiary character with time. Decanting is recommended if enjoyed in its youth.
A truly iconic New Zealand Cabernet Merlot blend and a cornerstone wine for collectors seeking pedigree, structure, and longevity.
