2024 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 750ml Cork

The 2024 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz continues the legacy of one of Australia’s most recognised and collected red wines. First made by legendary Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert in 1960, Bin 389 combines the structure and longevity of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness and generosity of Shiraz. It is often referred to as “Baby Grange”, partly because components of the wine are traditionally matured in barrels previously used for the preceding vintage of Grange.

The 2024 is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Shiraz, sourced across key South Australian regions including Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and others. The 2024 season finished warm and dry, resulting in small, concentrated berries with firm tannin structure and excellent flavour intensity—conditions particularly well suited to the classic Bin 389 style.

Deep plum-red with a vibrant crimson rim, the nose is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, revealing mulberry and layered black and red fruits alongside sweet spice. More savoury characters emerge with air: ironstone, black olive, green peppercorn, tobacco leaf and Italian herbs, complemented by violet and lavender florals.

The palate is rich, generous and layered, with dark chocolate, cherry liqueur and blueberry flavours forming a concentrated core. Fresh acidity provides lift and balance, while finely resolved, talc-like tannins give the wine its characteristic structure. The combination of Cabernet authority and Shiraz generosity delivers considerable depth and persistence while retaining the balance required for extended cellaring.

The quality of the 2024 release has already attracted strong critical recognition, including 98 points from Andrew Caillard MW and 98 points from Lisa Cardelli, alongside 97-point reviews from Ken Gargett, Jeni Port and Huon Hooke.

Bin 389 has long occupied an important position in the Penfolds collection, offering both immediate richness and considerable ageing potential. Penfolds lists the peak drinking window as now through 2051, making the 2024 an excellent candidate for medium- to long-term cellaring.
