An elegant, organically and biodynamically grown Shiraz from six distinct blocks across Yangarra Estate’s elevated Blewitt Springs vineyard. Co-fermented with a small proportion of Viognier, the wine combines perfumed red and dark fruit, savoury spice and fine tannins with the freshness and mineral character of its sandy and ironstone soils.
Yangarra Estate specialises in southern Rhône varieties grown across its McLaren Vale property, where altitude, ancient geology, varied soils and maritime influence contribute clarity, structure and distinctive site expression.
The fruit was sourced from six estate blocks, with approximately half grown on sandy soils and half on ironstone. These soils lie over the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation and contribute contrasting elements of fragrance, elegance and savoury structure.
The 2023 growing season began with significantly above-average rainfall, followed by cool and wet conditions through spring. Careful shoot thinning and leaf removal improved airflow and sun exposure, allowing the majority of the vineyard to be harvested within a three-week period before Easter. The cooler season produced one of the estate’s prettier and more delicate expressions.
The blend comprises 96% Shiraz and 4% Viognier, co-fermented for seamless integration. The fruit was destemmed and selectively sorted, with 20% retained as whole berries. Wild fermentation took place in open fermenters, followed by up to 25 days on skins with gentle cap wetting and minimal extraction.
No pressings were included. The wine matured on lees for 15 months, predominantly in seasoned French oak puncheons and foudre, before bottling in August 2024.
Producer Winemaker Note
From the old-world Rhône Syrah to the South Australian red sweetheart, Shiraz evolves once again in the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs. Sourced from six unique blocks on our elevated site, the elegant Yangarra Shiraz is shaped by its connection to the sand and ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation beneath.

Perfumed and spicy, showing aromas of wild blackberries, licorice, olive brine, boysenberries, bresaola and dark chocolate. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with finely tuned tannins and generous texture, leading into a saline-edged finish full of purity and freshness. Lovely lift beneath the dark fruit. Drink or hold.

There’s a certain suave ease to this, both in fragrance and calm glide across the palate, though it sits in a mid-weight zone. Ripe red fruits more than black, warm spices, a trace of hardy herbs, the ferrous influence discreet. It’s a charming wine, undemanding in all the right ways.
