Ironheart is Yangarra Estate’s flagship Shiraz, produced from its single-vineyard property in elevated Blewitt Springs. The 2023 vintage combines concentrated dark fruit, savoury complexity and authoritative tannins with the fragrance and finesse achieved during a cool growing season.
Yangarra Estate is a biodynamic vineyard and winery specialising in southern Rhône varieties. Its combination of altitude, ancient geology, sandy ironstone soils and maritime influence produces wines with distinctive concentration, structure and freshness.
The Ironheart vineyard lies at the northern edge of McLaren Vale. Its northern aspect, elevated position and sandy ironstone soils provide the conditions for Shiraz with immense concentration, mineral character and finesse.
The 2023 growing season began with significantly above-average rainfall, followed by cool and wet conditions throughout spring. Careful shoot thinning and leaf removal improved airflow and sunlight exposure while protecting the naturally low-yielding crop.
The majority of the estate was harvested within a three-week period before Easter, with picking completed in early April. This cool vintage produced one of the prettier and more delicate expressions from the estate.
The Shiraz was hand-picked on 4 April. Twenty percent was retained as whole bunches, while the remaining fruit was destemmed, selectively berry sorted and crushed. Wild fermentation took place in open fermenters, followed by approximately 20 days on skins with gentle cap wetting and minimal extraction. No pressings were included.
The wine matured for a total of 16 months. It spent six months on lees in French oak puncheons, 35% new, before being blended into one-year-old Austrian and French oak foudre for a further ten months. It was bottled in August 2024.

It’s all deftly handled though, matched by the thrumming power of the fruit, with notes of blackberry pastille, soft licorice, freshly ground fruity coffee and rusted iron. It’s testament to the farming here that so much flavour is achieved at this ripeness and weight, and this promises to age well; just give it a year or two.

It’s a meaty, bloody, black cherry-and-blackberry driven wine with earth, sweet spice, game and leather characters littered throughout. It has excellent power and also excellent tannin, the finish firm and commanding. Length is very good/excellent too.
