A remarkably scarce Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru from a tiny 0.1277-hectare parcel perched directly above Petits Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine Faiveley La Combe d'Orveau 2022 is a concentrated yet refined expression of this exceptional limestone terroir. Planted in 1945, the parcel produces just one to two barrels in the finest vintages.
Faiveley describes La Combe d'Orveau as a “Petit Musigny” in its own right. Its shallow, stony soils lie directly over limestone-rich rock, bringing pronounced minerality to a wine that combines concentration and power with black cherry, subtle oak and toasted notes, balanced tannins and an elegant, delicate finish.
La Combe d'Orveau occupies an unusual position immediately above Petits Musigny Grand Cru. This small sector of Chambolle-Musigny is notable for Grand Cru, Premier Cru and village-level vineyards lying side by side.
Domaine Faiveley owns just 0.1277 hectares (0.32 acres), planted in 1945. The parcel has a south to south-east exposure, with pebbly soils resting directly on limestone-rich rock. According to the domaine, this geology gives La Combe d'Orveau more pronounced minerality than Musigny. Production is extremely limited at only one to two barrels per year in the finest vintages.
The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand, with the proportion of destemmed fruit and whole clusters varying according to the vintage. Daily punch-downs are used during vinification, with approximately 19 days of vatting. The free-run wine is transferred by gravity, while the marc is pressed slowly and gently to obtain a particularly pure press wine.
The wine is matured for 16 months in fine-grained, moderately toasted French oak barrels, comprising 40–50% new oak and 50–60% one-wine barrels. Ageing takes place in the domaine’s cellars under naturally consistent temperature and humidity.
COLOUR
“Bright garnet in colour.”
NOSE
“Delicate nose disclosing fruity and oaky notes.”
PALATE
“The palate reveals fruity, toasty notes such as black cherry and a firm tannic structure. An elegant, delicate and very distinctive wine.”
— Domaine Faiveley
Founded in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 by Joseph Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s historic family domaines. Today, seventh-generation Eve and Erwan Faiveley oversee approximately 115 hectares of vineyards spanning the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablis, including around 10 hectares of Grand Cru holdings.
Best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Domaine Faiveley combines traditional Burgundian winemaking with modern precision. Its extensive vineyard holdings encompass some of Burgundy’s most distinguished appellations, while long maturation in the domaine’s historic cellars remains an important part of its approach.
