A limited-release Magnum of Bass Phillip’s Estate Chardonnay from Gippsland. 96pts by Halliday. The 2022 is fresh and finely structured, with citrus, stone fruit, creamy lees notes and good ageing potential.
2022 was a low-yielding vintage, with cool and wet conditions through spring and early summer followed by warmer weather. Chardonnay was hand picked from the Leongatha vineyard on 7 and 8 March, with yields of just 2 tonnes per hectare.
The Estate Chardonnay is selected from barrels from Bass Phillip’s Leongatha vineyard. The vineyards have been organic since 1993 and biodynamic since 2002, with no irrigation.
The grapes were whole-bunch pressed directly to barrel for natural fermentation. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and matured for 14 months in light-toast, extra-tight-grain oak before gravity racking. No fining was used, with coarse filtration before bottling.
A creamy Chardonnay, quite peachy and opulent with a hint of toffee but also with some bright citrus notes wafting in the background. The palate is round and supple, soft acid, mouth watering ripe peach flavours fill the palate and certainly made to be enjoyed now.
96/100 — Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
“The bass line is all acidity, lively, exhilarating… citrus, white stone fruit, florals and ginger spice. It’s a hit. Pristine and racy, refreshing, mouth-watering and classy.”
