The 2001 Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz is an historic single-vineyard release from the remaining five hectares of Penfolds' original Adelaide property. It was produced from the earliest Magill Estate harvest then recorded and received a Blue-Gold award at the 2004 Sydney International Wine Competition.
Established in 1844, Magill Estate is both the birthplace of Penfolds and the source of its only wine grown and made entirely on the original property. First produced in 1983, Magill Estate Shiraz is hand-picked and crafted in the historic winery using open fermenters and a basket press.
The resulting wine is traditionally medium-weighted, with a velvety texture and fine tannins. Since the 1997 vintage, Magill Estate Shiraz has been presented in distinctive laser-etched bottles.
A warm season brought the crop to maturity well before the arrival of March rainfall. The fruit was hand-picked in excellent condition between 12 and 15 February 2001, making this the earliest Magill Estate vintage on record at the time.
The grapes were hand-picked, vinified in open fermenters and basket pressed at the historic winery located only metres from the vineyard. The wine was then matured for 14 months in new oak, comprising 73% French and 27% American barrels.
Producer Tasting Note: Lively deep crimson. At once both savoury and spicy. Nutmeg and plummy/dark cherried fruitcake aromas oscillate alongside notes of rum and raisin dark chocolate. Cedary French oak helps preserve the varietal and regional aromatic integrity of this single estate shiraz. A medium weight palate, with mulberry and wild raspberry fruits, tightly contained by satiny tannins that literally coat the whole mouth. Charming, balanced, and long lingering flavours, are courted by malty oak and ideal acidity. In the mould of the 1996.

Round, plush and hedonistic, the Magill barely falls on the conservative side of “over the top” this year. Deep aromas of vanilla bean and meat segue to a blackberry-and-vanilla ride on the palate. Long and luscious on the finish; really quite sexy overall.
