The 1998 Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz is one of the landmark releases of Australia’s most celebrated wine. Grange is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds' multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, built around intensely flavoured Shiraz with a small Cabernet Sauvignon component for added structure and aromatic lift.
Officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia, Grange has an unbroken lineage dating back to the experimental 1951 vintage. The 1998 release is widely regarded as one of the great modern Grange vintages, combining immense fruit concentration, new American oak maturation and long-term cellaring authority.
The 1998 season delivered cool spring weather, followed by a warm summer and very low rainfall. Fruit quality was outstanding, producing Shiraz of exceptional intensity, fine tannins and structure. The final blend is 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine was matured for 18 months in new American oak, a hallmark of the Grange style, adding depth, polish and further ageing capacity.
100 points - Falstaff
Dark ruby-garnet with an alluring nose of peppermint, eucalyptus, blackberry jam, chocolate and red fruits; powerful, harmonious and mineral on the finish.
98 points - Adrian van Velsen, vvWine.ch
Still in outstanding form, complex and deep, with eucalyptus spice, blueberries, smoky notes and a long, almost endless finish.
98 points - Gismondi on Wine
A serious, luscious and cellar-worthy Grange, with raspberry, blackberry, licorice, toasted mocha and remarkable balance.
96 points - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
Massive, powerful and packed with layers of ripe fruit, smoke and spice.
96 points - Robert Parker The Wine Advocate
Drinking window: 2016-2030.
95 points - Wine Enthusiast
Still remarkably intense, with eucalyptus, vanilla, coffee and a plush, muscular palate finishing with big, soft tannins.
Colour: Bright, almost impenetrable dark red.
Nose: Youthful and intense, showing dark Satsuma plum, liqueured dark chocolate, licorice, malt, toasty barrel ferment and nutty oak.
Palate: Deeply layered with raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, supported by licorice, new oak and ripe velvety tannins. Powerful, even-textured and remarkably long.
Best suited to richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, dry-aged beef, slow-braised short ribs, game meats and aged hard cheeses.
Drinking window: 2010-2045. This mature Grange is within its long drinking window and should be assessed with care due to age, provenance and bottle condition.
Penfolds is one of Australia's most important wine producers, with Grange standing as its flagship release. Created by Max Schubert, Grange helped define Australia's fine wine identity through its bold use of fully ripe Shiraz, multi-region blending and maturation in new American oak.
